Davis Cup Return for Djokovic

They may boast of developing the worlds best male tennis player in Novak Djokovic, but Serbia failed in their bid to win the Davis Cup last year when they fell 4-1 to eventual champions, Czech Republic, in the quarter-finals. Novak Djokovic opted out of the 2012 tournament, instead focussing on his singles career that saw him reach the French and US Open finals, win the Australian Open and claim the ATP World Tour Finals this autumn. Without Djokovic in their midst, Serbias singles duo consisted of world number nine, Janko Tipsarevic, and 38-ranked Viktor Troicki their Davis Cup campaign did not go well. Yet tennis fans wondering if they will ever see Djokovic back in Davis Cup action will be relieved to hear the world number one is scheduled to make a return to the competition he helped his nation win in 2010. Djokovics camp have confirmed the 26-year-old will once again balance his singles commitments with team efforts, as Serbia look to replicate the success of two years ago and claim only a second Davis Cup title. And, with Djokovic in their ranks, Serbia have a genuine chance to win the tournament in 2013; the team greatly missed the consistency and class that Djokovic brings to court when up against the Czechs earlier this year. Troicki most likely to be the man sacrificed for Djokovics return fell in straight sets to both Tomas Berdych and Lukas Rosol, while Tipsarevic narrowly scraped a single point for his country with a five-set victory over Radek Stepanek, the fifth finishing 9-7. Now with Djokovic in their ranks punters on Betfair can look forward to Serbia going all the way next year. The right-hander has won 21 of his 28 matches in the Davis Cup and, during the 2010 campaign, won every singles game he played meaning Serbia have a mental head start over opponents Belgium when the teams meet in Charleroi next spring.
