The US Open capped a "remarkable" and "emotional" year for world number one Rafael Nadal, who paid tribute to uncle Toni following his victory over Kevin Anderson in New York on Sunday.

Nadal's resurgence in 2017 continued at Flushing Meadows as he accounted for 28th seed Anderson 6-3 6-3 6-4 in the US Open final.

This year's US Open will become the first tennis tournament to top $50 million (£39m) in prize money following a nine per cent increase in the total purse.

Winners of the men's and women's singles titles will each earn $3.7m (£2.86m), over £600,000 more than Wimbledon winners Roger Federer and Garbine Muguruza.

Madison Keys lamented her nervousness after being crushed by Sloane Stephens in the US Open final on Saturday.

Stephens needed just 61 minutes to claim a 6-3 6-0 victory over Keys in a clash between two Americans in their first grand slam final.

Keys, 22, rued her inability to handle the occasion of a major decider on Arthur Ashe Stadium, after committing 30 unforced errors.

Del Potro angry after missed opportunity against Nadal

Juan Martin del Potro expressed his anger after he missed out on a spot in the US Open final following a four-set defeat to top seed Rafael Nadal.

After saving two match points against Dominic Thiem in the last 16 and upstaging 19-time grand slam champion Roger Federer in the quarter-finals, 24th seed Del Potro lost 4-6 6-0 6-3 6-2 in New York on Friday.

Juan Martin del Potro and Rafa Nadal are still expected to produce some spectacular fireworks at the U.S. Open on Friday, even if it was not the semi-final many fans had been hoping for.

Argentine del Potro ruined the potential Nadal showdown with Roger Federer in the semi-final with a superb defeat of the Swiss maestro on Wednesday.
