Roger Federer gained revenge for his US Open defeat to Juan Martin del Potro by coming from behind to set up a mouth-watering Shanghai Masters final against Rafael Nadal.

Del Potro dumped the 19-time grand slam champion out in New York at the quarter-final stage last month and threatened a repeat before going down 3-6 6-3 6-3 in a gripping semi-final on Saturday.

World number one Rafael Nadal squeezed past Marin Cilic into the Shanghai Masters final with a 7-5 7-6(3) victory over the big-serving Croatian on Saturday.

Nadal, runner-up in 2009, was pushed hard by the battling fourth seed, who put his booming forehand to good use but failed to derail the Spaniard, who has now won 16 matches in a row.

Roger Federer joined Rafael Nadal in securing his place in the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters with a straight-sets win over Richard Gasquet.

Earlier on Friday, Nadal battled to a three-set win over Grigor Dimitrov but there were few such problems for Federer, who improved his record over the Frenchman to 16-2 with a 7-5 6-4 success.

World number one Rafa Nadal battled past Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 7-6(4) 6-3 and into the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters on Friday.

The 16-times grand slam winner, who beat Dimitrov in three sets in the China Open semi-finals last week, fired 32 winners and won two crucial breaks to prevail in two and a half hours.

British number one Andy Murray reached the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters - then said he would "love" to win the French Open in 2017.

The Scot beat David Goffin 6-2 6-2 on Friday in one hour 35 minutes.

Should he reach the final in Shanghai, he could face Novak Djokovic, who beat him to win this year's French Open.

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic hummed on the baseline to keep himself calm as he survived an almighty scare against 110th-ranked Mischa Zverev to reach the Shanghai Masters semi-finals on Friday.

The defending champion, who has been struggling with motivation and injuries, lost the first set and was then taken to a second-set tie-break as tensions rose at the Qi Zhong Tennis Centre.
