Daria Gavrilova reached the semifinals of the WTA Hong Kong Open for the second year in succession after a "silly" second-set meltdown and an error-strewn win against teenager Lizette Cabrera on Friday.

The Australian world number 22 eventually came through 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, but only after an almighty struggle with her serve, a string of unforced errors and her own state of mind.

Rafael Nadal made it fourteen wins in a row on Thursday, as he crushed Italy’s Fabio Fognini 6-3 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters.

Nadal is aiming to win a third successive title after victories at the US Open and China Open, and is on course to finish as the year end World No 1 for the fourth time in his career.

Wozniacki, Svitolina pull out of Hong Kong Open

Caroline Wozniacki and Elina Svitolina have both pulled out of the Hong Kong Open, handing walkovers into the quarter-finals to Lizette Cabrera and Nicole Gibbs respectively.

With Eugenie Bouchard, Agnieszka Radwanska and Venus Williams having already been eliminated from the tournament, Wozniacki and top seed Svitolina were the remaining star names in the draw.

Second seed Williams coasted past Risa Ozaki in the first round but came unstuck against another Japanese on Wednesday, losing 7-5 6-2 to Naomi Osaka.

Johanna Konta's hopes of qualifying for the WTA Finals have suffered another blow after she pulled out of next week's Hong Kong Open with a foot injury.

The British number one has lost her last five matches, most recently a 6-1 6-2 thrashing by Monica Niculescu in the opening round of the China Open on Sunday.
